The idea for developing a Web Portal which allows people to make a Simple Will online took root back in 2010 when a group of friends (among which, a lawyer) felt that many people were discouraged from making their Wills because of the legal fees charged by lawyers.
Or thought that these legal fees were prohibitive enough for them to delay in making their Last Will and Testament.
Many people tend to allow the hustle and bustle of their work commitments to distract them from taking care of their own things : be it their health, investments for their future or management of their own affairs generally.
Often, they allow their careers, their bosses, their clients and perhaps their sense of service to others to distract themselves from taking care of their own important matters.
Indeed, many were not prepared to face and address the eventuality of all human beings, that they may suddenly leave this world and their loved ones behind.
Some might feel that they are living from day to day and do not have much to leave to their loved ones : so why bother to make a Will, that it would be laughable.
But the idea of making a Will really serves much more than dealing with your own assets (however much or little). Making a Will can also serve to tell your loved ones how much you have appreciated them while you were alive and having relationships with them.
Yes, its true that many Wills in the modern day only deal in an unemotional and septic manner with the distribution of one’s assets. It is no longer a common practice for a Will to be read to loved ones after the passing of a person.
Most modern Wills also only deal with important assets that have a significant monetary value which can be sold and distributed to the beneficiaries.
More often than not, because of the need to cap the legal fees, there is no time devoted on the drafting of statements of love or appreciation to beneficiaries.
There will also be a lack of attention being given to the many personal items of a Will Maker. A loved one or a friend may be especially touched to receive a gift and mention in your Will. Some personal items may have special emotional or sentimental values to a friend who shared happy times or a hobby with you.
In our hassled and hurried world, the gifting of these sentimental things to loved ones and friends in a Will, may be seen to have no economic value.
But, it would have been a beautiful way to leave gifts to your loved ones and friends when it is time for you to leave this world.
Sometimes, leaving a special note for your loved ones to do something quirky or funny for you after your death, may even give your loved ones or friends, a sense of closure. You may want some personal things to be sent out to sea or buried in a special place that you had enjoyed with them.
As with the lost art of writing letters, Wills in the modern world, have also lost the tender touches of Wills made by people in the eras before our own.
Wills Smith Pte Ltd wants to change all of that and provide the platform for people to :
- Make Wills cheaply on their own.
- Make Wills with personal touches.
- Provide a facility where they can review and amend their previous Wills easily and cheaply.
- Provide a forum where people can share views on what worries them the most at the thought of leaving loved ones behind.
- Fulfill a role in providing a forum where they can learn how different people from different cultures, creed and religions view death.
- Fulfill a role in providing a forum where, hopefully, they can learn to cope with the fear of death and leaving loved ones behind.
Sharing is Caring!
